Milwaukee Common Council members Marina Dimitrijevic and Alex Brower have called for an end to the use of the controversial Flock camera system by Milwaukee police, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Citing concerns over the surveillance of city residents, Dimitrijevic and Brower said they are willing to modify the city charter to ensure they stop the use of the cameras.
Their efforts come after the Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman and Mayor Cavalier Johnson placed restrictions on their use. The police department’s contract with Flock expires in January.
Norman said he is considering additional modifications to the use of Flock cameras, which track license plates but also can use artificial intelligence to record private information and pool it into a searchable, national database.
Law enforcement agencies say the cameras have been helpful in solving crime, but organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union have raised concerns about their misuse.
