During his visit Tuesday to the United Nations in New York, President Donald Trump signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland designed to improve security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, according to an Associated Press report.
The agreement eases tensions over Trump’s earlier demands for Greenland, a mineral rich island, to become part of the United States and his threats to seize the territory from NATO ally Denmark.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had warned that a U.S. takeover would irrevocably harm the NATO alliance, but officials from the U.S., Greenland and Denmark had quietly been negotiating for months to address Trump’s concerns about security.
The deal keeps Greenland under Danish control but bolsters America’s existing security presence on the island.
