A potential thaw in the trade war between the U.S. and Canada is possible after President Donald Trump announced on social media that he would delay a 50% tariff on Canadian imports after reaching a tentative trade deal.
The agreement, reached within two hours of the tariff taking effect on $20 billion of Canadian goods, allows three more days to negotiate a final deal, according to an Associated Press article.
The tariff would have applied to products ranging from “hockey sticks to tongue depressors,” the article said.
Trump said Canada, which threatened to respond with retaliatory tariffs, committed to eliminate measures the Trump administration views as discriminatory against American exports, including dairy products and motor vehicles.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also said substantial progress has been made.
