Support of large-scale data centers is considered politically radioactive, and most elected officials are running away from the fallout.
That’s not the case for President Donald Trump, who continues to talk about their potential economic benefits to local communities, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
During a campaign stop last week, Trump ignored concerns about high utility rates, water usage and other environmental impacts and focused on the plus side of the ledger.
“If I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant in, an AI plant or a data center, I would absolutely want it because the jobs are enormous and the money paid, the taxes paid, are just enormous,” Trump said.
For Republicans, the comments could complicate this fall’s political campaigns. Democrats already lead Republicans by 8 points on the generic congressional ballot, which historically has been a good gauge of which party will gain seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
