Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany will be among the public officials taking part in a town hall meeting on the proposed BECI transmission line on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Kalahari Resort in Baraboo.
The meeting, which will also address the future of Wisconsin’s energy policy, will take place in the Kilimanjaro Room at the Kalahari, located at 1305 Kalahari Drive. Doors will open at 5 p.m.
Tiffany said he opposes the 765 kV transmission line, which would go through nine southern Wisconsin counties. and does not support carving new transmission corridors through Wisconsin farmland when reasonable alternatives exist.
State lawmakers and community leaders also are expected to attend.
The meeting comes as a growing number of Wisconsin lawmakers from both major political parties have expressed opposition to new power line construction, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden and state Sen. Howard Marklein have written a joint letter to Gov. Tony Evers calling on him to enact a moratorium on the BECI and MariBell transmission lines that would run through the Driftless Region.
The Sept. 18 town hall is not hosted by the Tiffany for Wisconsin campaign.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Tiffany’s opponent in the governor’s race, also opposes the BECI project.
