Tom Tiffany comes from a farm family, but he’s also a Republican in an era when it’s not politically safe to buck the party’s leader in the White House.
Nevertheless, Tiffany said Tuesday that he supports Wisconsin farmers in their opposition to President Donald Trump’s plan to import cheaper foreign beef to the U.S., according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
With the affordability issue in mind, Trump plans to temporarily reduce tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imported into the U.S.
Under the president’s plan, the reduced tariffs would last for 90 days.
Tiffany, who faces Democrat David Crowley in the race for governor, said during a press conference that the Trump administration should not penalize Wisconsin farmers “by having beef that comes in from other countries.”
