Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed Wednesday that a case of the highly contagious avian flu virus has been reported on a poultry farm in Barron County, according to a report by Wisconsin Public Radio.
Dr. Darlene Konkle, a state veterinarian, said agricultural officials were notified early as the farm began to see increased mortality among its population of birds.
Affected birds have been culled from the flock, she said.
Konkle said the state has seen similar reports in the Upper Midwest and other regions of the U.S. for several weeks, including a growing number of mink farms.
The situation would be worse if not for the biosecurity training of employees on commercial poultry farms, she said.
