Tariffs have cost Wisconsin an estimated $5.5 billion since January 2025, which amounts to about $2,179 per Wisconsin household, according to a report by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation.
In this category, Wisconsin ranks 19th-highest in the country, the foundation said.
Tariffs, which are taxes imposed by one country on goods imported from another country, have been the lever of President Donald Trump’s attempts to negotiate new trade deals with U.S. trading partners.
But they come at a cost because some trading partners have responded with retaliatory tariffs on certain goods. According to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, the Wisconsin goods most affected by higher tariffs is the broad category of machinery and parts, including building materials. This category has seen an estimated $525 million in additional tariffs paid in the past 19 months.
Tariffs also have raised the cost of steel, aluminum and lumber, the foundation said.
