Wisconsin’s Legislative Fiscal Bureau now projects that Wisconsin’s budget surplus is approaching the $3 billion mark, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The nonpartisan bureau said Thursday the state collected $23.1 billion in tax revenues during the 2025-26 fiscal year, putting the state on a course to add $450 million to its last surplus estimate of $2.5 billion.
Based on that estimate, tax collections surpassed the previous fiscal year by 3.4%.
The revised estimate has some lawmakers calling for the state to return a portion of the surplus to taxpayers.
Earlier this year, the Legislature voted down a plan to devote some of the budget surplus to cutting property and income taxes and providing more funding to public schools.
The plan was negotiated between Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Voss.
