Mikki Smith, principal of Madison East High School, is set to retire at the end of this school year, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
Smith’s announcement comes after three decades in education and over 14 years at East — more than three as principal, and 11 years as assistant principal. She also worked at La Follette and Madison West high schools.
The hiring process for a new principal will begin immediately, Superintendent Joe Gothard said in an email to the school. Family and student input will be solicited through a survey and then used to create a job profile for candidate screenings. A community panel including some staff, parents, and students will also have the opportunity to interview finalists for the job.
Gothard will make the final hiring decision and send his recommendation to the district’s school board for approval.
