If Wisconsin communities want to ramp up the building of condominiums to help address the housing shortage, they might have to review state laws regarding construction defect liability, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum.
The report, which chronicles the reasons why the building of condos has slowed since the Great Recession, offered several potential ways to stimulate their production.
One potential avenue is to change laws to reduce potential liability for builders, developers and architects, the report said.
The report also looked at financing options, including the use of state funds to help finance the construction of condos — a more affordable entry point to home ownership — in underserved communities.
