A redesign of a stretch of Milwaukee Street on Madison’s east side aims to boost traffic safety, according to the Cap Times.
The city’s Transportation Commission unanimously approved a new layout for the street between Starkweather Creek and West Corporate Drive at a meeting this month, citing anticipated growth along the major east-west corridor.
The plans include medians and a new shared-use path on Milwaukee Street’s north side from Walter Street to West Corporate Drive. The project will also bring a bike lane on Milwaukee Street’s south side, multiple raised intersections, broader terrace spaces, parking on the street’s north side and the replacement of underground water and sewer infrastructure.
The street has been redesignated a “community main street” rather than a “community collector street” to accommodate the redesign and an expected increase in mixed-use development along the corridor.
