In a sign of the economic times, video game consoles continue to rise in price when they have historically used price drops to entice more to buy into a platform.
Valve’s Steam Deck, a handheld device, is the latest to rise in price.
According to Game Informer, the cheapest model of the Steam Deck will rise from $549 to $789. The 1TB OLED model will jump $300 to $949.
Valve said the price hikes “reflect the current state of component costs and other global logistical challenges across the industry as a whole.”
In addition to Valve, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all raised hardware prices. Current economic woes have been to blame, as has the lack of RAM as AI companies purchase it for data centers.
