Shelby Olstad founded Miggy’s Bakes, named after her beloved dog, in 2019 as an online side hustle while majoring in economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She had no idea the business would soon take off, garnering a loyal contingent of online customers; becoming a familiar fixture at Madison-area farmers’ markets and pop-ups; and in 2023 getting its own brick-and-mortar space.

Olstad sells cookies, cakes, bars and more from her Middleton storefront, which also hosts events for the community. The business now generates upwards of $600,000 in revenue from online and in-person sales, and employs five full-time and around 20 part-time staff.
While further expansion has not recently been top-of-mind for Olstad, who got married this spring, she said the local response to Miggy’s has exceeded her imagination.
