People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the federal government to investigate recent lab money injuries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s federally funded primate lab, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The animal rights group called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct the investigation, after two monkeys sustained serious injuries in separate incidents on March 12 and April 6 of this year.
In the March 12 case, the arm of one primate had to be amputated at the elbow after being injured by another monkey.
The university said it has responded by updating its feeding and watering procedures and retraining the worker responsible for the second injury, which was less severe but also required treatment.
The USDA has yet to respond to PETA’s demand for an investigation.
