Skin protectant bemotrizinol, a chemical long used in Europe and other parts of the world, has been approved by the FDA for use in sunscreen in the U.S., the Associated Press reported.
It marks the first time in more than 25 years that a new sunscreen ingredient was approved by the federal regulatory body.
The agency said the ingredient is safe for those six months and older.
Parsol Shield from Dutch manufacturer DSM Nutritional Products will be the first product to market with the ingredient. It should launch later this year.
There is an 18-month exclusivity window before other companies can use the new ingredient.
