The city of Madison Clerk’s Office said liquor license holders need to be aware of a new phishing scam.

According to the office, phishing scammers are using public application and license information to identify possible targets. The scammers then ask for invoices to be paid for license fees via wire transfer, peer-to-peer payment or cryptocurrency.

The Clerk’s Office said to make sure an email comes from a “@ cityofmadison.com” address. Any other address is fraudulent.

The city of Madison never requests payments via wire transfer or with cryptocurrency.
