The Madison School District is on solid ground when it comes to its budget for the next school year, but a new report shows that it’s relying more on property taxes, the Wisconsin State Journal reported

The Wisconsin Policy Forum report shows property taxes make up 72% of MMSD’s operating budget for the 2026-2027 year. This is the largest percentage taxes have made up in a decade.

In recent years, MMSD, as well as schools across the state, have had to go to referendum to vote on increasing property taxes to support schools.

The report said MMSD is likely to be successful in future referendum endeavors, but that residents could soon become tired of supporting the increases. Many school referendums across the state failed in Wisconsin’s Spring Election.
