The Midcontinent Independent System Operator has proposed new rules for large data centers connecting to the power grid, including performance standards, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
MISO, power grid operator for Wisconsin and 14 other states, proposed the rules in an Aug. 28 filing to federal regulators.
According to the report, the rules would apply to facilities that use in excess of 50 megawatts of power.
They would require large data center operators to provide MISO with information about their operations and short-term electricity demand.
They would also help MISO maintain grid reliability as the demand for power accelerates and establish performance requirements for large data centers.
If approved, the rules would take effect in December.
