The city of Milwaukee appears ready to join the growing list of communities that are slamming on the brakes on data center development.
On Monday, the city Plan Commission approved a one-year moratorium on large data centers to give Common Council members time to enact a regulatory framework for future data center proposals, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The moratorium now advances to the full City Council.
Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, a co-sponsor of the moratorium, said the large data centers are moving too fast for governments to establish regulatory protections.
“We realized in the zoning code that there were basically no protections for the people,” Dimitrijevic said. “Someone could come and there’d be little space for public debate.”
