Marquette professor Majeed Hayat receives NSF grant to develop smarter imaging

Marquette University professor Majeed Hayat has received a National Science Foundation grant worth nearly $600,000 to develop novel improvements to hyperspectral imaging, the university announced today.

Havat, chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering in Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering, is the principal investigator on the NSF grant, and he will work to provide efficient sensing and processing for hyperspectral imaging.

Hyperspectral imaging is the process of capturing every wavelength for every pixel of an image, which produces massive file sizes and leads to processing delays associated with the management and transmission of the files.

Hayat and his colleagues aim to develop a hardware-software solution that captures not only the necessary wavelengths but eliminates the need to both transmit and store large image files.

“Our goal is to meet the need and interest for novel software-hardware co-design approaches which sense only the spectral bands that are relevant to a given application and perform most of the sensor data processing and analysis as close as possible to the sensor array,” Hayat said in a press release.

“These requirements will render a device that transmits only outcomes, thereby significantly reducing communication traffic and power consumption while improving speed, privacy and performance.”

Hyperspectral imaging is commonly used in medical, environmental monitoring, military and agricultural fields.

Hayat is joined on the project by Christinel Ababei, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Marquette; Payman Zarkesh-Ha, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of New Mexico; and Bradley Ratliff, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Dayton.
