While President Donald Trump’s approval rating has declined, his GOP support and influence on primary voters remains strong, according to a new Marquette Law School survey.

The president’s overall approval is down to 38%. Specifically, approval of his handling of the economy is at 30%, whereas approval on his handling of inflation and the cost of living is at 22%.

Only 19% approve of the state of gasoline prices. Gasoline prices soared after the Iran war began in February before dipping in the past two weeks though prices are still over $1 more per gallon, on average, compared to a year ago.

Also, 18% say the U.S. has achieved its goals in Iran, with 28% saying the war was worth it.

Most of the people polled said Democrats are better suited to handle the economy and inflation, not Republicans.

Trump still has strong influence with voters in Republican primary elections. Of Republicans polled, 71%said they would vote for a primary candidate Trump endorsed; 20% would vote for an incumbent Republican Trump opposed.

The survey was conducted May 20-26, 2026, interviewing 1,001 adults nationwide.
