The location of large, hyperscale data centers is among the rules under consideration by the city of Madison as its one-year moratorium on new data centers is set to expire, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The moratorium, which expires in three months, was passed to allow city planners to set up a regulatory framework.
That framework will address the siting of large data centers, and industrial areas on the city’s far east and southeast sides appear to be the best bet.
City regulations would divide data centers into small facilities of less than 10,000 square feet; medium facilities of 10,000 to 50,000 square feet; and large facilities of 50,000 to 100,000 square feet.
