As part of a structural change, the Madison Police Department said Monday that it will create a new Service Excellence and Outreach Section that will focus on use of force, professional development, accountability and transparency.
Viewpoints: How long must we wait for justice to work for everyone?
Madison Police Chief John Patterson said the new section will be added early next year and will be divided into three units – use of force, community outreach and professional development.
The change comes two months after the fatal shooting of Madison resident Corey Ruiz at the hands of Madison police, which is under investigation by state and local authorities.
“This is a chance for us to invest more deeply in our commitments to continuous improvement and quality assurance,” Patterson said. “This is a commitment to improve our proactive identification of trends, ability to develop needed training, ability to improve policy and ability to ensure that our services are always high quality and in line with our mission and the expectations of our community.”
The new section will be under the leadership of Capt. Matthew Nordquist and Lt. Jimmy Imoehl.
