Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway’s proposed 2027 Executive Capital Budget proposal will formally be introduced next month, but she gave the public and elected officials a look at her proposals this week on the city’s website.
Among the highlights are $87.8 million in the city’s affordable housing fund to help meet the goal of creating 15,000 more homes by 2030; $42.1 million for street reconstruction, including the redesign of Regent Street to make it more pedestrian- and business-friendly; and funding to launch a body-worn camera program for the Madison Police Department in the aftermath of the fatal police shooting of Madison resident Corey Ruiz.
Rhodes-Conway said the public will have multiple opportunities to weigh in on the proposed budgets at forthcoming public hearings.
“It’s a delicate balancing act to prepare for the needs of a growing city while keeping our debt payments, felt in the operating budget, at a sustainable level,” she said in a statement.
“Due to cutbacks in funding from state and federal governments, the burden of maintaining critical infrastructure is falling too heavily on local property taxpayers.”
