Madison College said Thursday that student parents are facing difficult decisions about how to afford childcare while pursuing their education after the rejection of its application for $2 million in federal funding.
The college said it was not selected for funding under the Child Care Access Means Parents in School program despite receiving a perfect score from reviewers.
CCAMPIS funding helps students afford childcare while they pursue their education. Madison College has received program funding since 2005.
Without a new grant award, student support is at risk for 28 student parents whose families, including 34 children, are directly affected by the loss of federal funding.
Madison College President Jennifer Berne said in a press release the loss exposes a larger societal challenge.
“Childcare funding decisions cannot be made without considering what happens to students when that support suddenly disappears,” Berne said. “Higher education institutions need a voice in shaping future funding decisions to ensure resources are distributed more broadly and consistently, without disrupting the support students depend on.”
