WorldWise Microfinance, an antipoverty nonprofit based in Madison, has launched a new program to stimulate small business growth in Malawi.

Malawi is the fourth poorest country in the world, and WMF is partnering with the Centre for Child Development and Research, a Malawi-based NGO represented in Dane County by UW doctoral student Isaac Phiri, to change that.

CCDR supports community economic empowerment initiatives in Malawi and primarily focuses on women’s empowerment. The new microloan program supports CCDR’s work with bolstering women’s participation in agriculture. It also develops female leadership and supports community-led economic resilience through sustainable farming.

“We want Malawian farmers, most of whom are women, to be able to diversify their sources of income and build a cushion against droughts and floods,” WMF president Tom Eggert said in a statement.
