Another effect of the federal government shutdown: a loss of funds for food assistance in Wisconsin.

Gov. Tony Evers announced Tuesday that Wisconsin’s FoodShare program, a food assistance program, will not have funding in 10 days.

FoodShare is funded completely by federal dollars, and may not be available to families next month if the federal government shutdown continues.

About 42 million people rely on SNAP benefits nationally (FoodShare is Wisconsin’s name for the federal program). Nearly 700,000 Wisconsin residents will be without access to food without the assistance.

The federal government shutdown has reached day 21, with the major sticking point being an agreement on extending tax credits under the Affordable Care Act, which Democrats maintain are needed to keep health care affordable.

“With rising costs and President Trump’s chaotic trade wars, Wisconsin families are already struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, and every day that Republicans continue this reckless and harmful shutdown is another day that our kids, families, farmers, veterans, seniors and communities fall even further behind,” Evers said in a statement.
