Peregrine falcons at Madison Gas and Electric’s Blount Generating Station took their first flights, with one injuring itself so badly that the Dane County Humane Society’s Wildlife Center is asking for funds to cover the cost of surgery and rehabilitation.
In May, the two peregrine falcons — a federally protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act— hatched, and Honey and Monarch recently took their first flights.
Monarch fell to the ground, fracturing his left leg near the knee.
A procedure to heal the bird is taking place on Thursday afternoon.
“Since Peregrine Falcons are endangered in Wisconsin, helping this bird and conserving this species matters,” Lisa Bernard, a spokesperson for the DCHS, said in a statement. “We’re asking for our community’s support and help to provide the necessary care and rehabilitation this young falcon needs so he can one day return to flying over Madison, where they belong.”
