Another of President Donald Trump’s executive orders has been temporarily halted by a federal judge, and this one could impact the 2026 mid-term elections.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani blocked the government from implementing Trump’s order to limit mail-in voting, stalling the directive for the second time.
The case could be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which has already made a procedural decision in favor of the Trump administration.
The executive order states that by law, only American citizens can vote, charges the U.S. Postal Service with determining who may vote by mail and instructs the postal service to refuse to deliver ballots or send them to anyone not included on newly created federal mail voter lists.
Nearly one-third of American voters now vote by mail, and election officials say there might not be enough time to comply with Trump’s directive.
Critics say the order, if implemented, would block eligible American citizens from voting.
