Nekoosa-based Central Sands Dairy has been ordered to pay $245,000 in a settlement with the state of Wisconsin for discharging manure into groundwater in violation of Wisconsin law, according to an Oct. 17 report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In a complaint filed in Juneau County Circuit Court, the state Department of Justice said that by not controlling manure at its production area, Central Sands Diary failed to comply with state groundwater quality standards.

Central Sands was also accused of failing to upgrade its 2007 manure storage facility after the state raised concerns about manure from the facility leaking into groundwater.

The farm was also accused of over-applying nitrogen on fields between 2019 and 2023.
