Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers sent a letter to President Donald Trump and every member of Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation on July 23, demanding answers for the Trump administration’s continued delays in processing applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Evers said that under the Trump administration, recipients of the DACA program, also known as “Dreamers,” have experienced significant delays in renewing their program applications.
Since 2012, DACA has provided individuals who came to the U.S. as children the opportunity to apply for and obtain legal work status, ensuring they can work and support themselves and their families.
By delaying application renewals, Evers said the administration is creating long-lasting challenges for DACA recipients who are following every law to obtain legal work permits, to stay in the U.S. and work legally, while threatening Wisconsin’s workforce and economy.
“Mr. President, I urge you to end this harmful practice by your administration and resume expeditious processing and renewal of DACA applications,” wrote Evers.
Earlier this year, Evers signed Assembly Bill 759, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 240, a bipartisan bill that helps address Wisconsin’s generational workforce challenges by removing unnecessary barriers to employment for DACA recipients who are already living and working in Wisconsin.
Act 240 allows them to obtain credentials for certain occupations if they satisfy all applicable credentialing requirements, allowing workers to join several key areas of the state workforce that have a demonstrated need, including registered nurses, dentists, teachers, emergency medical technicians and trade workers.
