Gov. Tony Evers on Wednesday formally requested a disaster declaration from President Donald Trump in response to severe storms that ripped through Wisconsin on July 27.
The storms, which included at least one confirmed EF-3 tornado in the Menasha/Appleton area, caused more than $8.2 million in damage to residences and over $13.8 million in public sector damage, according to assessments by Wisconsin Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
More than 2,300 residential properties were evaluated.
Evers’ request for aid comes amid criticism of the Trump Administration for prioritizing disaster relief to Republican-run states.
“Wisconsin has been hit especially hard by severe weather over the last few years, and we cannot afford for the federal government not to step up to the plate and get states like ours help when we need it,” Evers, a Democrat, said in a press release.
