Citing family reasons, Sumit Rana, president of Verona electronic medical records software giant Epic Systems, will leave the company on Aug. 14, according to a report in Healthcare IT Today.
The publication reported that Rana shared the news Friday in an email to Epic staff, and cited his father’s recent passing, and the need to be more present for his mother, who lives in India, as the reasons for his decision.
According to Healthcare IT Today, his departure leaves a hole in Epic’s leadership structure, as Rana was seen in the industry as the eventual successor to Epic founder Judy Faulkner, who is 82.
Asked about his emotions as he steps away, Rana told the publication that the overwhelming feeling is gratitude, with some bittersweetness.
“Our north star has always been that the needs of providers and their patients come first, and I’ve had a wonderful opportunity to make my small contribution to that mission,” Rana said.
“Leaving people I love working with, colleagues and customers alike, is hard. And I’m at peace with it,” he said. “This is the right thing for my family right now, and I’m leaving with a full heart.”
On Monday, Epic released the following statement:
“Sumit Rana is outstanding and we deeply appreciate all the amazing value he has provided to our customers, our staff, and our company. We will always consider him a great friend to Epic.
“As we look to the future, a small group of strong leaders that he and others have mentored will be stepping up to take on additional responsibilities,” the company said. “For almost 50 years, our culture has been, and continues to be, one of growing new leaders who are capable of strong contributions to our future.”
Epic also provided Rana’s full email. It read as follows:
Hi all,
I have news to share that is both personal and difficult for me. I will be stepping away from Epic, and my last day will be August 14th, 2026.
Last November, my father passed away, and it’s been a difficult time for our family. My mother lives in India, and this change will allow me to be present for her and help her navigate this tender chapter. It will also let me devote more of my time and my whole heart to my wife and kids.
I’ve often said that Epic is the best thing that ever happened to me. I’ve learned from some of the finest teachers and made some of the best friends of my life along the way. It’s been a privilege to work alongside so many brilliant, hardworking people of deep conviction. You are so much of what makes Epic, Epic.
I am so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together — congratulations. And for all that success, I believe Epic’s best days are still ahead. So, keep doing what we’ve always done best: Do Good, Have Fun, Make Money. I’ll be cheering you on.
With deep gratitude,
Sumit
