Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline returned to service Monday with the help of a temporary bypass around the point of a major gas leak in Iron County, according to a report by Wisconsin Public Radio.

Line 5, which was damaged Aug. 25 when an unoccupied flatbed truck rolled into it, carries up to 23 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids daily between Superior, Wisconsin, and Sarnia, Ontario, in Canada.

More than 1 million gallons of natural gas liquids were released into the atmosphere, causing the evacuation of a nearby rural home.

It was the largest oil and gas pipeline spill reported in Wisconsin in more than 50 years.

Citing a lack of state approvals, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources last week urged Enbridge to halt construction on the bypass, but the company said it worked with local officials and federal regulators to protect public health while the bypass was built.
