Leaders of EMD Electronics on Oct. 2 joined Gov. Tony Evers and other state officials to celebrate the opening of their new $200 million research and development facility at the company’s Sheboygan Falls site.

The 38,000-square-foot facility will expand the company’s ability to develop advanced materials for semiconductor manufacturing.

The expansion is expected to create 44 jobs.

John Miller, Secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp, also attended the ceremony.

WEDC is supporting the expansion with up to $4.5 million in performance-based tax credits for EMD.

As is the case with other WEDC investments, the amount of the credits depends on the amount of capital invested and the number of jobs created.

“EMD Electronics’ continued investment in Sheboygan Falls demonstrates the important role Wisconsin’s skilled workforce and strong manufacturing foundation can play in the future of the semiconductor industry,” Miller said in a press release.

“This R&D facility brings advanced research and development capabilities to our state, creates opportunities for highly skilled jobs and strengthens Wisconsin’s position as a place where global companies can develop and scale the technologies of the future,” Miller said.

EMD Electronics is the North American electronics business of Merck KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany.
