Edgewood University and city of Fitchburg officials Thursday marked the start of construction of the university’s new $30 million Athletics and Wellness Campus in Fitchburg.

The 40-acre site is located at the corner of Seminole Highway and Lacy Road, outside the Catholic university’s Monroe Street campus in Madison, but it will serve a growing student-athlete population and become the home of Edgewood Eagle Athletics.

The campus will have spaces for six sports, including baseball and softball, and a training facility.

“It is a great day for our students, for our institution, for our community, and for the future of Edgewood University,” President

Andrew Manion said in a press release.

“The addition of this Athletics and Wellness campus begins a new era for the vibrant learning community that was established nearly a century ago by our Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa.”

In restoring 12 acres of native wetlands at the site, the university said it will expand opportunities for environmental science education and recreation for students and visitors.
