The World Health Organization said Wednesday the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Congo is on track to surpass the deadliest one in history, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The deadliest outbreak, known as the West African Ebola outbreak, unfolded between 2014 to 2016, killing more than 11,000 people out of more than 28,000 cases.
The latest outbreak in eastern Congo, which is considered the fastest-growing in history, has killed over 2,000 people out of more than 4,300 cases.
Though efforts are underway to develop a vaccine, the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible for the new cases has no approved vaccines or treatments.
Efforts to track and manage the outbreak are complicated by an ongoing conflict near the Congo’s borders with South Sudan, Uganda and Rwanda.
