The Canopy Center, a Madison nonprofit dedicated to helping children, families and individuals through programs that prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, received a $152,000 investment from Dean Health Plan by Medica.
The multi-year investment supports the expansion of Canopy Center’s Multisytemic Therapy model, an evidence-based approach to help children process trauma and strengthen caregiver relationships to promote healing.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to heal, grow and thrive after experiencing trauma,” Josh Gustafson, Wisconsin market president for Medica, said in a statement. “As a community health plan, we believe improving community health means supporting organizations that address challenges before they become lifelong barriers. Canopy Center is helping children and families rebuild their lives, and we’re proud to invest in services that make that healing possible.”
According to Wisconsin health officials, nearly 37% of children have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience and nearly 16% have experienced two or more.
“Children recover best when the adults around them have the tools and support to heal alongside them,” Sarah Berndt, executive director at the Canopy Center, said in a statement. “This investment allows us to reach more families, expand access to evidence-based care and help create stability and support children need to move forward after trauma.”
