In a move that was applauded by environmental groups, Dairyland Power Cooperative and South Shore Energy Thursday canceled their plans for the Nemadji Trail Energy Center, a 625 megawatt natural gas plant.
In announcing the cancellation, the company asked the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to withdraw its permits.
The NTEC, which was to be built on the shore of Lake Superior, faced years of opposition from local residents, environmental groups and members of the Fond du Lac and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Environmental groups opposed the project, citing its potential effects on climate change and public health.
“We applaud Dairyland Power Coop and South Shore Energy for formally cancelling the NTEC gas plant and asking for their permits to be withdrawn, after the clock ran out on their PSC permits,” Elizabeth Ward, Wisconsin chapter director for the Sierra Club, said in a press release.
