The village of Cottage Grove Monday became the latest municipality to end its use of controversial Flock cameras, as the village board not only voted to discontinue their use but also voted to draft a new ordinance barring the use of any automated license plate readers, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The action follows similar moves by other Dane County municipalities and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
The cameras, made by Atlanta-based Flock Safety, read license plates but have generated controversy for other capabilities such as sharing the data they collect, especially with federal immigration authorities.
The cameras have also been illegally used for personal reasons by law enforcement personnel.
