Wisconsin health officials acknowledged last week that a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce could be contributing to some of Wisconsin’s recent cases of intestinal illness, according to an Aug. 8 article in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said Aug. 5 that 216 cases of cyclosporiasis have so far been reported in the state.
More than 6,000 cases have been reported across multiple states. All have been linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms, which led to a recall and the product’s removal from stores.
The affected products from Taylor Farms have use-by dates ranging from July 16 to Aug. 3. People should throw out the recalled lettuce if they still have some.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cyclosporiasis is caused by a parasite and has been linked to cases of “watery diarrhea.”
