Consumer confidence dips in August

The Conference Board announced Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index decreased slightly in August for the second consecutive month, and that consumer pessimism is growing over the near-term future of business and labor market conditions.

The Board said its monthly index of consumer sentiment decreased by 0.8 points to 89.4  in August, down from 90.2 in July.

Its Expectations Index, which measures consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business and labor market conditions, fell by 5.8 points to 68.2.

The survey period for this month’s preliminary results was August 3–16.
