A lawsuit filed by three Wisconsin conservative groups claims a new state law allowing sports betting is unconstitutional, according to a report from Wisconsin Public Radio.
The groups argue the law should be struck down because a 1993 amendment bans state lawmakers from authorizing new forms of gambling and because the sports betting law, adopted in March, only benefits members of tribal nations.
The lawsuit was filed by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty on behalf of the Brown County Taxpayers Association and Citizens Defending Liberty.
Wisconsin’s online sports betting law changed the definition of a “bet” to exclude wagers on such games if the servers facilitating these transactions are on tribal lands.
The lawsuit said lawmakers had no power to authorize sports betting because residents amended the Wisconsin Constitution in 1993 to explicitly limit gambling outside of bingo, raffles and state-run lotteries.
