Architectural Building Arts, a full-service design-build firm, has spent 35 years transforming kitchens, baths, and entire homes, earning the trust and love of clients along the way. As the firm celebrates this milestone, Principal Melinda Monroe reflects on the incredible journey from humble beginnings to industry leadership, with a special acknowledgment of the unwavering support from Oak Bank and its trusted banking advisor, Terry Taylor, president, Oak Bank.
A humble beginning and steady growth
The story of Architectural Building Arts began in a basement where it designed and built the Quarry Hill Building. “Soon after we moved into the building, I was promoted to partner and operations manager and over time, purchased ownership interest in Architectural Building Arts,” Monroe recalls. “We gradually expanded, adding accounting and administrative functions.” The recent transition of ownership to her son marks a new chapter, continuing the legacy with confidence. “I read that many construction companies fail after transitioning ownership, but not us,” she says proudly, attributing its success in part to the solid partnership with Oak Bank.
A trustworthy partnership
“When I was promoted to president of Architectural Building Arts, I contacted Terry to meet and review our business plan and financial documents. During our meeting, I was impressed with his deep knowledge and expertise, as well as his ability to listen and quickly assess our business needs. This made the decision to switch to Oak Bank an easy one. Since then, we’ve maintained all our business accounts with Oak Bank. I also do all my personal banking with them, and it’s been a wonderful experience,” she shares.
In an industry often dominated by men, she was resolute in ensuring respect and support for women. “That was the wonderful thing about Terry and Oak Bank. I always felt supported, especially during tough times like the economic downturn in 2008 and 2009. They made sure we had what we needed to keep our business thriving.”
Going above and beyond
One memorable instance of Oak Bank’s exceptional service was when her partner suddenly fell ill. “The team at Oak Bank quickly gathered the necessary paperwork to buy our current building, the Quarry Arts Building. They made the sale happen in a quick time frame, and we are beyond grateful to continue in the building we originally designed and built.”
Oak Bank’s treasury management team has also been instrumental in setting up accounts and processes that simplify banking. “Relationships are extremely important in our business, and Oak Bank truly cares about you. They make you feel comfortable approaching them with any situation, and they will help you get through it. And the fresh-baked cookies don’t hurt either,” she adds with a smile.
A different banking experience
Working with Oak Bank has been a refreshing change compared to previous banks. “You don’t get that ‘can-do’ feeling with other banks. At Oak Bank, you know the people you’re working with, and they hire wonderful people. Even at the drive-through, you’re treated kindly and respectfully. It’s not a little thing when you’re doing business day in and day out. It adds up, and that’s why I personally recommend Oak Bank to other businesses regularly.”
One significant project required extensive documentation to verify the company’s stability. “Terry met with me and worked through all the requirements, helping us secure the project. It paved the way for future projects and helped us grow our business.”
A legacy of impact and gratitude
As Architectural Building Arts celebrates 35 years and looks forward to retirement, Monroe reflects on the impact the firm has had. “It’s amazing to see how many lives you touch. Since announcing my retirement, I’ve received notes, letters, and even videos from people expressing how we’ve made a difference in their lives. Changing people’s spaces changes their lives, and I feel very grateful for all I’ve been able to do.”
Through it all, the relationship with Taylor has grown beyond business. “Over the years, we’ve become more like friends. Terry even gives me hugs, which I’m not sure he does with all his clients,” she says fondly.
Architectural Building Arts’ journey of 35 years is a testament to dedication, quality, and strong partnerships. The firm’s success and seamless transition to the next generation would not have been possible without the steadfast support of Oak Bank and its remarkable team. As Architectural Building Arts looks forward to the future, the legacy of excellence and community impact continues, thanks in part to the enduring partnership with Oak Bank.
