As expected, the Canadian government Tuesday responded to U.S. tariffs with retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of American goods, including dairy products and farm equipment, the Associated Press reported.
Canada also slapped tariffs on steel and appliances as the trade war between once allied nations intensified.
According to the AP, new tariffs went beyond industrial goods and affect everyday purchases such as cheese, seafood and clothing.
Canada’s retaliation followed the collapse of trade negotiations and the Trump administration’s subsequent imposition of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
“We did not choose this conflict, but when our economic integration is used as a weapon rather than the foundation for a win-win partnership, we need to stand up,” said Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.
On Aug. 18, the Trump administration had indicated that a trade deal was imminent, but it fell apart as Trump’s Aug. 21 deadline to avoid tariffs passed.
