The University of Wisconsin-Madison saw a decline of 30 percent in international freshman students, with President Donald Trump’s policies directly affecting enrollment, according to a Wisconsin Public Radio report.
UW-Madison chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said in April that more than two dozen student and alumni visas were terminated.
The number of international students at the university had grown in previous years, from 6,000 in 2020 to almost 8,000 in 2024.
The university declined to give a specific number of students this year, but admitted to a decline in international student enrollment.
The trend is nationwide, with universities reporting about 20 percent fewer international students.
