A local developer in Mount Horeb wants to demolish a pair of century-old houses on the city’s main street to construct a four-story building, and the move is drawing opposition from locals, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The $22 million development would be 6,500 square feet, with commercial space on the ground floor and 63 apartments above. It would occupy most of the 200 block of East Main Street and be at a height of about the Mount Horeb Opera Block, the tallest building on Main Street.
Residents cited in the report say the building would lower the street’s charm, increase traffic and reduce parking, affecting business sales.
The developer behind the project, Jeff Grundahl, is CEO of JG Development. He worked on the Duluth Trading Company headquarters, a five-story building on East Front Street, which is the largest building in Mount Horeb.
The proposal was tabled during an Oct. 22 planning commission meeting, but the proposal will be revisited on Nov. 19.
