An east side restaurant sustained significant damage, and two people were injured Tuesday night after a Metro Transit bus crashed into Asian House at 1 Dempsey Road, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The incident, reported around 7:45 p.m., occurred after the bus driver was attacked by a passenger, who fled the crash scene before officers arrived and is still being sought.
The Madison Fire Department extracted two people, including the driver, from the bus; the former was taken to a local hospital, while the latter was treated at the scene. It was unclear how many people were on the bus at the time of the crash.
Justin Stuehrenberg, Metro Transit’s general manager, said in a statement: “Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but this was clearly an alarming incident for all involved. It is also concerning that violence was directed toward one of our drivers. Metro employees are valued public servants whose work is important to the lives of our residents, and they should be treated with respect.”
The vehicle remained in the building for over 90 minutes before being towed from the scene. According to the restaurant’s website, it is closed on Tuesdays.
