At a meeting that ran from Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, Madison’s City Council approved a 138-unit apartment building on Old Sauk Road, the redevelopment of the Essen Haus block downtown, and the construction of a tiny house village on the far east side, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. It also approved the preliminary plat for the future development of the Voit Farm on the city’s east side.
The Old Sauk Road apartment building comes from Stone House Development and New Madison Development, both of Madison, and would be situated on a four-acre site at 6610–6706 Old Sauk Road. The site has faced opposition from many area residents.
The Essen Haus block redevelopment would make way for an eight-story, 178-unit apartment building and a six-story, 100-room hotel next to the Hotel Ruby Marie. Eau Claire developer JCap Real Estate would demolish the German restaurant, among other buildings on East Wilson Street and South Blair Street, and rebuild the Come Back In and J.B. Drives Store Building’s façades.
The tiny house village comes from Occupy Madison and will provide housing for the homeless at 201–205 S. Stoughton Road, on a property rezoned from “industrial-limited” to the “tiny house village.” The nonprofit would house people in 22 temporary shelters, which would eventually be replaced with wooden tiny houses manufactured on-site.
